Nuristan the “Land of Light,” a region to the northeast of Afghanistan, is imbedded in the Hindu Kush valleys to the south of its main ridge. It was earlier known as Kafiristan (Kāferestān), the land of the non-Islamic. The beautiful nature of Nuristan is a combination of forests, mountains, green valleys, and large and small seas, which has created a beautiful natural landscape in this place and is considered one of the most spectacular areas of Afghanistan. Most of this province consists of green valleys, mountains, and hills, the forests of this province include Archa, Jalghuzeh, Najo, and Cypress. Nuristan province has few agricultural lands compared to dense forests, and its water-filled valleys attract attention, and clear water flows from springs in every corner of this province. The area of Nuristan province is 9225 square kilometers and its population is estimated to be around 167,000 (2021-2022).
The main language of this province is Nuristani, but 15% of its people speak the Pashya language, and 1% of its residents are Pashtuns, and in some areas, there are also Tajiks. But the official language of this province is Pashto. This province is bordered by Badakhshan province in the north, Chitral and Kashmir region of Pakistan in the east, Kunar province in the south, and Panjshir, Kapisa, and Laghman in the west.
